2019/2020 Torbay & Devon Civic Award Highlights from Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Primary School.

Anthony

For my Civic Award, the charity I chose to support was The Ann Conroy Trust. They support people with Chiari Malformation, which my Mum has. To raise money for them, me, Poncho and Oliver had a bake sale and we each raised £20 for our chosen charities.

In the school community,I’m a school councillor, prefect, librarian and digital leader. I help people check in and out their books as a librarian and I’m responsible for the music during assembly.

In the local community, I attend Scouts. I participated in the Remembrance Sunday service and the Harvest Festival where I helped collect food for homeless people.

For my active hobby I took up cycling. I have been practicing riding on the road and learning more about road safety. I have also helped my little brother to ride better.

For my non-active hobby, I took up guitar by practicing and taking weekly lessons every Wednesday.

Finally, for my Adventure Training, I have been on several camps with Scouts. I have also done SurvivalTraining and been on hikes on Dartmoor.

For my Civic Award I was on a mission to donate as much as I could to the Rowcroft Hospice and also donate my hair to the Little Princesses Trust. (I was due to have my hair cut in march however, due to Covid19, I am now booked in for the 10th of July and still plan to donate my hair).

I have also been learning how to skateboard with my Dad and how to cook/bake with my Mum, I think I have been pretty successful at both 🙂

A new hobby I have taken up is drawing which I have been really enjoying and have also received some nice complements for my work.

Chosen charity: Rowcroft Hospice & Macmillan Cancer Support

I feel both of these charities are really good causes.  Rowcroft is very local to the area and provided care for my great Grandad many years ago.  Macmillan really help people who are going through a journey with cancer and need support.

I had planned to have a bake sale at school to raise money for my chosen charities & also take part in the Rowcroft Hospice ‘Sleep Walk’ raising money from sponsors.  Due to Covid-19 I was unable to do either of these but I hope I can raise money for both these good causes soon.

Active Citizenship in the school community:

I am a prefect, digital leader & Librarian at school since Sept 2019.  I enjoy all of these roles and feel I have gained lots of experience from them.
I like to act as a role model for the school and show responsibility.

Active Citizenship in the local community:

I have been a Girl Guide since Sept 2019 and enjoy taking part in all the activities available through this including raising money for charities through craft sales, raffles & bake sales.

Active hobby:

My active hobby is swimming.  I have been a member of Paignton Swimming Club for about 3 years now and have just gained a place in the Learn to Compete squad.  I train 3 times a week and enjoy taking part in club swimming galas.

Non active hobby:

My non active hobby is independent cooking.  I have recently enjoyed learning to cook at home, I also love reading recipe books.  I like to cook meals for the family including, pasta dishes & muffin pizzas.  I like to bake cookies & cakes to share with my family too.  I intended to bake for my charity cake sale too.

Adventure training – residential:

I went on residential to Cardiff in year 5 & we visited the big pit, the Natural History museum of Wales & Cardiff Castle.  It was quite an adventure & the first time I’d been away from home without my family.

I have enjoyed going out for walks along the South West coastal path & the woods around Cockington & Babbacombe with my family.  We found some really fun rope swings too!

For my civic award I went to a meeting at Rowcroft Hospice and received a fundraising pack from them as this was my chosen charity.

Before Christmas I went to torbay hospital to sing some Christmas carols with our school choir.

In March when we went into lockdown I wrote a card to my elderly neighbours and a family with young children in case they needed anything like shopping. In the card I wrote, HERE TO HELP. If you need anything like shopping or anything else please call …

My neighbours called to say thank you and that they were pleased to know they could call us if they needed anything.

I drew a rainbow and put it in my bedroom window to say thank you to our NHS and I beeped our car horn every Thursday night for clap for carers, frontline staff and all key workers.

On Easter Saturday evening I secretly put an Easter egg on the door step of all of my neighbours to surprise them on Easter Sunday morning. They did not know it was me!

I grew some plants and tomato plants and gave out 8 plants to the neighbours in our apartment block.

My Chosen Charity.

My chosen charity is Women’s Aid. I chose this charity because when we lived in Birmingham, my family and I would often donate household items and also purchase items from our local Women’s Aid shop. I feel that it is a cause that is quite under funded so this is why I chose this very important charity.

To help raise money for Women’s Aid, I decided I would hold a Biscuit Stall.

On the 12th February 2020 i emailed Women’s Aid to tell them about my plans for fundraising and also to ask if there were any resources that would help me with my stall. A Fundraising Officer called Flora replied to my email and told me that they were thrilled to hear of my fundraising plans. Flora suggested going on to their website where I could print off sponsor forms and bunting and also get some ideas to help, which I did. Flora also posted out a fundraising pack to me, which included leaflets, booklets, balloons and collection boxes.

I held my Biscuit Stall on 19th February 2020, during half term at Brixham Pannier Market. Sean, who helps to manage the market advertised my Biscuit Stall on the markets Facebook page. On my stall I had home made biscuits, made by myself and my Mom, and also knitted toys made by my Nanny who lives in Birmingham.

We had a fantastic day and I raised £30.82 !!

Active Hobby.

For my active hobby, on 22nd September 2019 I joined Torbay and District Lifesaving Club. I have learnt so many new skills, rope throwing, towing casualties and general safety around water. I have gained my Rookie Lifeguard Bronze Stage 1 and Bronze Stage 2 awards.

I was planning to do a sponsored “Rope Throw & Rescue” event at my club sometime in May 2020 to help raise further funds for Women’s Aid but unfortunately this wasn’t possible due to the pandemic.

In August 2019, after moving from Birmingham to Torquay, I became a member of the Torbay Olympic Gymnastics club where I am a member of the Gymnastics Display Squad and also the Trampolining Squad.

Active Citizenship in the School Community.

At school I was selected to be a Prefect, which I am very proud of. My duties are to place the milk tub outside the Year 6 classroom for the class to help themselves, at break and lunch time I lead the KS1 children back into school and at lunch time I take the lunch trolley to the hall and return it to the Year 6 corridor.

Non-Active Hobby.

At the beginning of the lockdown, as well as completing my home schooling work, I was able to have a tidy up and sort out of my cuddly toys. I managed to sort a pile of cuddly toys that I no longer wanted. I decided to put them in a big basket and place them at the front of our front garden. I placed a chalk board in the garden with a message saying “STAY SAFE! Please choose 1 item. Thank You. FREE to a good home. TAKE CARE”

My idea was that when people walked past our house they could stop and choose a cuddly toy to take with them. With the lovely sunny weather we were having, it was great to be able to put my basket in the garden each morning and hopefully bring some much needed smiles to people’s faces.

Please find attached some photos of my “Biscuit Stall” and “Lockdown Giveaway”.

Bella

Bella helped to grow some corn and lettuce. We have used the lettuce and the corn is huge, but not ready yet.

She has been helping to bring shopping for her Nan and GreatNan as they have been unable to get out due to having to self isolate. Her GreatNan was in hospital and got out just before the Lockdown, Bella has helped keep her spirits up and we took our new puppy, Coco, over to see her (keeping to social distancing guidelines), which cheered her up.

She has been outside clapping for Clap for Carers on a Thursday evening.
