2019/2020 Torbay & Devon Civic Award Highlights from Torre C of E Academy.

Residential

“Heatree was my best experience in my life!”

“I was the only girl to jump in the water!”

“I learnt a lot of things and made many friends along with long lasting memories that I will never leave behind from scary stories to sharing a bunk with your best friend.”

Active Hobbies

“Every week on Mondays, I normally go to South Devon Athletics Club. It takes place at Churston Ferrers Grammar School. In the winter we go to their sports hall and use their equipment, in the summer we use their sports field. These are some of the activities we have done in the Autumn term: Cross Country, High Jump, Long Jump, Bleep Test, Vortex Throws, Sprints 75m and Track 600m. Also in the Autumn term I completed five park runs (5k) and one junior park run.”

“Climbing always refreshes my mind.”

“She’s been cooking like crazy and of course been doing drama, football, hockey, netball and cricket!!”

“My active hobby would have to be netball. I am captain of our netball team and have been playing netball for about 6 years now. I love it and have attended every game giving up many things to participate in the sport. My other passion is drama and music. I have been in nearly every show at my school and many outside of school. I have been going to Doorstep Arts twice a week for 7 years now and love it to bits. I am also in many other sports teams but had to choose my favourite!”

Non Active Hobbies

“Each week I have been learning the piano. I attended piano lessons and spent time practising.”

“I used to play the piano at my teacher’s house but due to Coronavirus I Facetime her instead. Sometimes it is a bit of a struggle to hear what she is saying but I have got used to it. I am still practising the piano lots and I am very grateful to my teacher for carrying on with my lessons even if Coronavirus is still going.”

“It had to be cooking and baking. I have loved it since I can remember and love it to bits especially with this lockdown! My love has really shown whether that’s baking cake or cooking meatballs. I enjoy cooking and I am particularly good at it.”

Active Citizenship in the Community

“On Saturday 15th February, Saturday 29th February and 7th March I helped out with the homeless shelter. There we helped out by putting out the mattress, the pillows, the duvets, a chair for each of them and with the schools donations a tube of toothpaste and a toothbrush. I also gave them some cookies that I had made for them. Then we laid the table cloths, the salt and peppers, the candles, put out some flowers, laid their napkins and then all of their cutlery for them to enjoy their meal.”

What I did for this is at the community center in Torquay town I did the homeless shelter for 10 weeks in a row. Me and some other children set up beds and toothbrushes and tables for 12 homeless men and women to stay the night. I went to all of them and felt really good after everyone of them. I felt like I had done something to help my local community.”

“Helping the homeless was a great experience for me because it is nice to know that I helped some people who don’t have a home…It was such a sad story about how he had become homeless, but at least he had somewhere to sleep that night and I am glad I helped a few people that night.”

Active Citizenship in School

“At school I help Mrs Harris (our lunch time lady) with the packed lunches. It is really fun because I get to stand behind a table laid out with food and the children come up and wait in a line and ask for what they would like to have for lunch from the various choices that they can choose from. It is good fun. I also help out with the bread and then I give them a cup of water. I really love helping out at the school. It is such a shame that I could not do more of it due to Coronavirus.”
