2025 / 2026 Civic Award Exwick Heights Primary School

Sams Kindness and Commitment

The Torbay and Devon Civic Award is always delighted to hear and celebrate wonderful stories from pupils’ work each year.

This year, Exwick Heights School have embraced the award and recently presented their Y6 student, Sam with a ‘Reach for the Heights’ Sticker for the kindness and commitment he has shown to his Year 3 buddy, Hayden.

As part of the Civic Award, the children have to demonstrate active citizenship through taking on a position of responsibility in school. Sam has absolutely gone the extra mile in this role!

He checks in with Hayden each day, to make sure he feels supported and ready to learn. Sam also came up with the great idea of practising tricky division questions from the previous day during morning work so Hayden can remember the method. He has supported Hayden with his AR reading quizzes and English writing too, all while making him smile and laugh along the way.

Hayden said, “I really love having Sam helping me. I used to find the maths tricky, but when Sam helps me it’s easy.”

His teacher, Miss Shearer, shared that Sam is making a really positive impact on Hayden’s learning and has a new excitement about coming to school. Hayden loves the new friendship that he has built with Sam and he is showing fantastic progress already.

Sam’s teacher, Eloise Khemlyani, who runs the Civic Award at the school said, ‘We are really impressed and inspired by Sam’steaching skills and the initiative he has shown. I feel proud ofthe care he is showing to Haydenand the kind and thoughtful role model that he is. Sam is now helping to train other Year 6 pupils in the buddy system so even more children can benefit from this wonderful support!’
