2025 / 2026 Civic Award St Marychurch C of E Primary & Nursery School

Kiana raises £102 for Dementia Research UK

Kiana Wadsworth, a pupil at St Marychurch C of E Primary School, has impressed everyone with her work for Dementia Research UK and is a great example of bringing the values of the award into practice!

‘When I heard about the Torbay and Devon Civic Award, I wanted to do it because I knew it would be fun and I’ve always liked helping people,’ she said.

Recently, Kiana lost her much loved grandmother to Dementia, and this hit the family incredibly hard. She says, ‘I chose Dementia research UK as my cause, as my grandma had this illness, so I wanted to help their charity. I came up with the idea of making brownies. I figured that most people like them, so I planned to try and make my own special ones, with the help of my mum. The idea was to sell them to make money for Dementia UK.’

Kiana and her mum, Alex, worked together to make forty brownies. ‘We tried our best to make the brownies as we aren’t the best at baking!!!’ laughed Kiana. They then organised two very successful cake sales at school. Kiana and her mum also contacted family and friends to collect further donations and managed to raise a huge £102 for Dementia Research UK.

‘It was fun as I learnt how to give change like a shop owner!’ she reflected. ‘I felt proud of myself and I’m sure my grandma would have been very proud of me too.’

We are sure she would be too Kiana. Well done!
