Ellen and Ella From St Marychurch Preparing Poppies with RBL

Ellen Dayment and Ella Rogers teamed up with RBL in creating Poppy Boxes as one of their Torbay Civic Award goals.

Ellen and Ella from St Marychurch Primary School arrived at Torquay RBL (Royal British Legion) in St Annes Road, Babbacombe on Friday 28th October at 10:am where they were greeted by Jan Bradley who gave them a quick briefing and then the girls were tasked in putting together flat packed boxes which they assembled and filled up with poppies in readiness to reach our streets and retail outlets.

Ellen commented: “It was amazing, I really had fun. If we’d had another hour we could have made up another 100″

Jo Sharlott, Ellen’s mum also added: ” It is vitality Important that the younger generation understand the importance of the poppy and what it represents.

“Needless to say she was very proud of her achievement. As was Ella Roberts of st Marychurch Primary School who teamed up with Ellen on the task”

Here are some pictures of Ellen and Ella busy at work.

It is predicted that this year 45 million poppies will be given away by 150,000 volunteers.

The poppy is a symbol to remember those who have given their lives in war.

The reason poppies are used to remember those who have given their lives in battle is because they are the flowers which grew on the battlefields after World War One ended.

The money raised from poppy donations is used to help servicemen and women who are still alive, whose lives have been changed by wars that they fought in.
