Another important element of the Torbay Civic Award is Citizenship in their locality. For this the children at Torre have been volunteering in the local homeless shelter.
On three Saturdays in February, seven Torbay Civic Award children went to Central Church in Torquay to help set up this important homeless shelter. They helped by making the beds, giving out toothpaste and toothbrushes and laying tables. They were also involved in school in encouraging other children to bring in donations for the shelter; managing a great whole school effort.
Lyla Haggan, one of the pupils taking part and currently working towards her award said, “From my experience I found it very enjoyable to be helping the homeless. The most challenging part was laying the table as all the homeless people needed to have exactly the same cutlery!”
