Highlights from Abbey School 2019/2020

Residential – PGL Liggington

What we learned:

I struggle to process new people and places and understand new surroundings.

I also struggle to process busy environments therefore with support of my aunt Catherines understanding this experience helped me to enjoy it.

It gave me a new experience that I would like to do again.

Charity Awarwness

Lona learnt that all people are equal and that we are really lucky to live in Western Europe. She plans to raise money for OHOB. She was inspired by this from when she was 7 and she cooked food for refugees coming to Austria.

Luke did a colour run to raise money for Little Harbour and donated £50 from the Christmas Craft Fayre.

Jessica cycled 16 miles along the Exe cycle trail to raise money for Animals in Distress.

Sofia hopes that her knowledge of the Blue Cross will make her become a better person and treat all animals and people the way that she would like to be treated.

Charlotte made objects to sell, donated 50% of the profit to the charity on the first fayre, and 100% on the second one. She is donating £60 yearly to Leukaemia UK to help them from her pocket money.

It was nice to meet other children with rare chromosome disorders and have their stories read to her this was fun and exciting, Sophie made new friends. She realised there are a lot of different people in the world and everyone should be kind to each other.

Non Active Hobby

Singing has definitely helped improve my confidence. I realised that to be successful you need to work hard, believe in yourself and have confidence to succeed in most things.

It has made me explore what I like doing and so I’ve practiced baking and I think that I’ve improved a lot with my new hobby.

Photography has helped me to see creatively and see the beauty in details.

You can always make time for reading and it encouraged to read more often.

Baking has helped me with my maths. I liked seeing my family enjoy eating my cakes.

Active Hobby

I really enjoy netball and have learnt a lot from being Netball Captain, I have enjoyed helping younger people learn the rules of netball and love the excitement of away games.

It made me motivated to become active and to be fit which made me feel very good about myself.

I cycled 16 laps (1 mile) of Southern Close every week until I had cycled 8 miles.

I learnt that it is good to be healthy because dancing promotes good wellbeing and keeps me fit. Also it is lots of fun and I am with friends.

I have learnt how to swim stronger and faster. I’ve been doing exercise while doing something I enjoy which is good since I don’t exercise that much.

Gymnastics has helped me develop because it has given me strength and helps with my hypermobility, it also taught me about resilience. It has helped me meet new friends away from school.

Home Community

I helped my Nan who is elderly and vulnerable.

I am planning on doing beach clean ups and I have been cooking meals for my family frequently to help my mum.

I went to a PRIDE celebration in Totnes

I went to London to a pro-EU demonstration as I believe in a bigger community.

I decided to pick up 10 pieces of litter a day for 2 months in Torbay.

I have realised that there may be vulnerable people that do not have anybody to do this for them and this is upsetting that they may not have this help.

I learnt how to take care of myself and I have learnt that I should do something about all the rubbish on the beaches.

I have found out that we should all take responsibility for helping others and that we can help in many ways.

I am now ready for challenges and runs in future which will be difficult, but I will push myself and stay confident until the end!

This experience made me develop as a person by showing me that we need to take care of our community and surroundings.

School Community

Our school values are respect, responsibility and resilience. I think I understand what these words mean more now and I have tried to always remember them and to use them.

I learnt how to work as a team with my house and I learnt how to encourage them to do their best.

I learnt a lot on how to manage and arrange football matches and swimming galas, I have also learnt how to write permission letters for these events.

I had to become more responsible, organised and understanding of other peoples’ feelings.
