2019 / 2020 Civic Award Blue Cross Oldway Primary School

Barney Kelly Torbay & Devon Civic Award 2019/2020

Active Citizenship in the School Community

At Oldway I have had the honour of being Head Boy. As Head Boy my plans were to organise school beach cleans to help the local environment. I also wanted to
make sure the school had a variety of books to help students think about conservation and helping the environment. Another thing that I have done within
school is to help other students with Performing Arts at lunch time. (I only got to do this a bit because of Lockdown).

Active Citizenship in the Local Community

I have been a part of a few beach cleans myself to help our local wildlife in Paignton and Brixham. Alongside this I have also been litter picking a few times
in my neighbourhood.

I also help my dad teach Martial Arts to his youngest students – I appeared online throughout Lockdown!

Active Hobbies

I enjoy using Poi, (which, if you didn’t know, are a kind of small ball on the end of a ribbon that is used in Maori dances) I like to go to my local park (behind my
house) to practise. I’m getting better and better! I like roller skating with my brothers and I’m very fast.

I used to take part in my dad’s Martial Arts classes but now I help as an assistant instructor.

Non-Active Hobbies

One of my favourite things to do is read an enjoyable book (my favourite at the moment is Mortal Engines by Philip Reeves) and I sometimes bake (if we have
the correct food for it). I have baked a lemon drizzle cake and a chocolate cake so far over Lockdown. I also helped my mum bake a Victoria sponge cake.

Residential Experience

I went on the Year 6 residential to Heatree House at the beginning of the year.

I took part in lots of exciting things including canoeing and climbing. I have also been to a high ropes course outside of school called Go Ape. My mum said I was
braver than my dad (who watched from the ground) and I was quicker than my brothers so I had an extra turn at the course.

Chosen Charity

I would love to support Blue Cross by simply printing off posters and placing them around the neighbourhood, telling people about the amazing charity and
how it’s helping pets worldwide. The reason why I have chosen Blue Cross over other charities is because I got my pet kitten – now called Luna – from my local
Blue Cross.
