Ellie, Meg and Martha’s Hike for Breast Cancer Now

Year 6 Students Ellie, Meg and Martha from Bovey Tracey Primary School raises £625 for Breast Cancer Now.

On the 21st of May we did a walk for Breast Cancer along the Dartmoor Way and camped overnight. It took us 8 hours to walk 22.1 miles. We wanted to raise money for Breast Cancer because we know how hard it is women to cope when they have this Cancer and we want to help them get through it.

Why is Supporting Breast Cancer important to me?

Matha explains that supporting Breast cancer is important to me because my best friend’s Mum had it as well as my Great-Grandmother and my childminder.

What is cancer?

In a healthy body, natural systems control the creation, growth and death of cells. Cancer occurs when these systems don’t work right. When cells don’t die at the normal rate, there’s more cell growth than cell death. This excess growth can form a tumour.

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast divide and grow without their normal control. Tumours in the breast tend to grow slowly. By the time a lump is large enough to feel, it may have been growing for as long as 10 years. Some tumours are aggressive and grow much faster.

Between 50-75 percent of breast cancers begin in the milk ducts, about 5-15 percent begin in the lobules and a few begin in other breast tissues.

On the first day we walked 17 miles from an Inn on Dartmoor to Holme. We then camped overnight. The next day all of our little sisters and our mums walked with us to Buckfast station, 5.1 miles away. In the end we raised a whopping £625 for Breast Cancer Now.

Breast Cancer Now is a UK research and support charity and are the place to turn for anything and everything to do with breast cancer. There available to support all Breast Cancer Victims. More details can be found by visiting their website at https://breastcancernow.org
